About

I was born near Cleveland and raised in the Midwest. When I came home to work and paint near home I came to realize how much my surrounding space informed my sensibilities and influenced what I chose to see. My journey into painting began with a study abroad in Florence, Italy, where I first grasped the medium’s potential. Returning home, I recognized how my surroundings shaped my vision and sensibilities.Initially, I painted from observation and outdoors, but now I primarily work in the studio, relying on memory and vague references. I discard initial studies, allowing the familiar to fade so that my work can focus on creating substance through sensation. My paintings explore landscapes, interiors, and architecture, seeking the quiet spaces between familiar forms. I layer paint with intention, using techniques that build atmospheric depth. Transitional light and subtle tonal shifts invite a deeper exploration of feeling over mere appearance. I embrace subtle implications rather than clear narratives, enjoying the inner dialogues that emerge when the viewer contemplates the image as a whole.

I was born near Cleveland and raised in the Midwest. After just beginning to get a grasp of what painting was I studied abroad in Florence, Italy. When I came back to continue working and painting near home I came to realize how much my surrounding space had cultivated my sensibilities and influenced what I chose to see.

Originally I learned to work from observation and en plein air, now I paint mostly in the studio where it becomes important to work from memory and vague reference. I throw away the studies from reference as quickly as possible, as a sort of sabotage. This is so I can let the familiar parts go and then the work can start to be about creating substance through sensation.

Through painting I use the thematics of landscape, interiors and architecture. I look for the resting places in between those familiar things. So I push and pull, scrape and press thin layers of paint into the surface. The work is put toward building space with atmosphere. Transitional light, subtle shifts in tone, and restraint of formal elements allow me to explore less about the things seen on the surface of a painting and more about how they transform into what might be felt. I give up exposition for subtle insinuations. I enjoy the inner dialogues that start to slowly surface when the eye stops darting around from thing to thing, in exchange for the quieter contemplation of taking the image in as a whole.
